DF64 V4 Review: The Ultimate Midrange Espresso Grinder?

The DF64 launched launched in 2021 and quickly gained popularity. Trying to dethrone the Niche Zero, it's now one of the most sought-after models in the market. This grinder has filled a particular demand for single-dosing, multi-purpose coffee grinders that is currently in vogue. The DF64 has earned the nickname Niche Killer due to its affordability, wide availability, and ability to produce a quality grind.

This review will provide a more detailed analysis of the DF64 coffee grinder to assess its performance and determine whether it represents a better option than the Niche Zero.

We have the new DF64 Gen 2 available here!

DF64 ELR V4 Upgrades

Upgraded and Improved Features

  • New de-clumper design
  • Included metal dial indicator for easy and accurate grind size adjustments
  • Improved burr carrier for increased stability and durability
  • Silicone burr seals to prevent grinds from entering the motor
  • New font on the adjustment dial for easier reading and precise adjustments.

Features

The DF64 is equipped with an impressive array of features that set it apart from other grinders in its class. Here are just a few of the features that make the DF64 so special:

  • 64mm flat burrs: The DF64's 64mm flat burrs are made of high-quality materials and are known for their durability and consistent grinds.
  • 250w Motor: The DF64 is equipped with a powerful motor that can handle most coffees
  • Stepless grind adjuster: The DF64 features a stepless grind adjuster that allows you to make precise grind size adjustments

Grind Consistency

The DF64 is known for its grind consistency. The powerful motor and burr design allow for a uniform grind size distribution, ensuring that each shot of espresso has the perfect extraction. During our filter coffee test, we found that it produced a clear cup.

The standard burrs of the DF64 V4 are generally effective for espresso and v60s but tend to be less reliable when used for coarser grind settings like a french press. One of the challenges with the DF64 is that it produces a significant amount of fine particles when regrinding at coarser settings. This has prompted many users to upgrade to SSP burrs instead.

However, it's worth noting that when using lighter roasts, the motor sometimes dips in RPM. This change in speed can result in a change in the grind size distribution.

Grind Retention

On the previous DF64 models, grind retention was a problem and in some cases caused regrinding. The V4 DF64 has been specifically designed to address this problem. The upgraded clump crusher in the V4 DF64 has been engineered to retain less coffee compared to the previous model, further enhancing its efficiency.

The design of the grind chamber has been optimized to minimize retention and prevent the unnecessary waste of precious coffee beans.

Static & RDT Method

One common issue that coffee grinders can face, including the DF64, is static build-up. This can result in a mess, as the ground coffee flies around the grinder, sticking to the sides and making a big mess. However, using the RDT method, static buildup if significantly reduced.

SSP Burr Upgrade

One of the best features of the DF64 is its ability to be upgraded. Equipped with 64mm burrs, they are easily replaceable with any other 64mm burrs, including SSP. This allows for a greater range of grind options and styles. Upgrading your grinder's performance is simple by swapping out the burrs with those from SSP or another brand.

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Consistent and precise grinds
  • Easy to use and program
  • Minimal grind retention
  • Price to performance is unmatched
  • Upgradable burrs

Cons:

  • Slightly larger size, making it difficult to store in small kitchens.
  • Motor could be more powerful
  • Static

Value for Money

When it comes to grind quality, the DF64 coffee grinder outperforms its competitors. Its premium grind consistency is unparalleled in this price range. If you end up wanting more performance out of your df64, you can purchase SSP burrs. Despite this extra costs, the DF64 remains reasonably priced.

DF64 vs Niche Zero

After conducting a comparison between the DF64 and Niche Zero grinders, it is evident that one stands out as the superior option for filter coffee. While both grinders have their own advantages and drawbacks, the DF64 exhibits a higher level of grind consistency, rendering it a more fitting choice for lighter roasts and pour-over coffee. In contrast, the Niche Zero has a wider distribution of grind sizes, making it a preferable option for medium roasts and espresso.

Choosing the better grinder depends on the type of coffee you're looking to make. If you're a fan of pour-overs, the DF64 is the clear winner. Its consistency and precision in grinding make it the ideal choice. However, when it comes to espresso, the winner is not so clear-cut. It depends on the style of espresso you prefer. Some users may prefer the Niche Zero for its ease to dial in, while others may prefer the DF64 for its more uniform grind size distribution.

In summary, the DF64 and Niche Zero are both high-end coffee grinders that offer distinct advantages and disadvantages, making the decision of which one to choose a matter of individual preference.

DF64 V5 Improvements

For the V5 update, I would like an improvement to the grind adjustment. It could provide more precision in the grind size. A common issue with the DF64 is the lack of precision in the coarser grind settings.

Removing the coarse setting, it would provide closer grind adjustments. With this added precision, users will be able to achieve the perfect grind size for their desired coffee type and enjoy a truly exceptional cup of coffee. The DF54 V5 would appeal to a wider range of coffee enthusiasts and professionals.

Conclusion

To conclude, the DF64 is a great choice for a midrange espresso grinder. Its consistency and precision, are unmatched at this price point making it the perfect choice for single dosing. What would you like to see in the next DF64?
